Black Enterprise

What is the state of black business this year? Perhaps the quickest way to find out is to pick up a copy of Black Enterprise (BE). This magazine, in business since 1970, is a slick, organized, well-written publication that focuses on the black community. Every year, a special June edition poses an exhausting challenge for the Black Enterprise staff. The "BE 100s" is an exclusive list of the nation's largest black-owned businesses and has been published for almost 25 years.
BE's contents are based on business with a black community theme. Each issue includes the usual cover story and feature articles along with about 10 departments covering small business, technology, money, corporate power, education, and more.
One area of the magazine that deserves special attention is the BE Board of Economists (BEBE). The eight-member board reviews and considers the economic impact of black-owned companies and the political-economic environment (e.g., viability of a flat tax and prospects for the congressional elections). Each member of the board is polled on his or her views and the article speaks to their feelings in general.
Regional profiles are also included with specific references to quality of life, employment, professional opportunities, BE 100 resident companies, colleges, and entrepreneurialism. Local institutes help with the research; for example, the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development contributed to the North Carolina regional profile. BEBE concludes its message with "The Economic Forecast for Black Americans."
The BE 100s are available on disk, a very valuable source of corporate statistics and key executive contacts. To order call (800) 543-6786.
