Christian Science Monitor Index
Recommended supplement
The Christian Science Monitor is a newspaper with both national and international scope that reports on general topics including business and economics. The Christian Science Monitor Index provides abstracts and comprehensive indexing of all significant articles in the newspaper. It is produced under exclusive agreement with the publisher. Newspaper editions indexed correspond to those available in microform from UMI. The index is issued in eight monthly and four quarterly cumulations, as well as a hardbound annual volume.
Indexed material includes news items; feature articles; editorials; editorial cartoons; commentaries; sports articles; business and financial news; and reviews of books, art exhibitions, dance movies, music, restaurants, theater, and television programs. Items not selected for indexing include advertising and the daily religious column.

This index is alphabetized according to a word-by-word filing scheme. Subject headings beginning with acronyms or other abbreviations file at the beginning of the alphabet letter. For ease of access, each abstract is assigned an average of three to four subject headings in the index. Personal names, institutional names, product names, and geographical headings are all treated as subject headings and are interfiled alphabetically with topical headings. Material concerning foreign countries is indexed under the country name and under appropriate topical, personal, and institutional subject headings.
Subject headings are based on a controlled-vocabulary thesaurus developed by UMI, containing approximately 4,000 general subject terms and authority files containing tens of thousands of personal, corporate, and product names.
