Dun & Bradstreet Reference Book of American Business

The leading supplier of business credit information since 1841 is the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. The basic D&B credit document is called a "Business Information Report" and goes for about five pages, focusing on bills past due, debts outstanding, payments made, and the like. Two companies compete for the majority of the credit rating business-D&B and TRW.

The Reference Book serves as a printed index to the more than 4 million U.S. companies for which current "Business Information Reports" are available. Companies are arranged geographically by state, and further divided by city, town, or village. Each listing cites the company name, its primary SIC number, telephone number, credit rating, types of reports available, and, for firms less than 10 years old, the founding date. Dun & Bradstreet's Reference Book of Manufacturers covers manufacturers only and includes more basic directory information, such as the address, and is arranged by company name. The best features of both publications are combined in a CD-ROM product called Dun's Reference Plus. Unfortunately, it is available only to subscribers of the credit reports.

D&B also provides the International Business Information Reports, which contain information and analyses that are essential in evaluating a firm's international operations, profitability, and stability. The reports are prepared by D&B business analysts who are familiar with the local customs and business practices.
