From this chapter:
This series of 12 books (in the process of being updated to 15) covering the European Union is an excellent reference source for individuals that need information on a specific country's business environment, organization, financial system (institutions and markets), taxation, accounting, auditing, and financial reporting. Illustrative financial statements, differences with U.S. accounting procedures, EC directives, and country legislation are all included. The information is presented in a relatively simple format that is easy to read with up-to-date charts and tables. The books are each hardbound, modest in size, and average 250 pages.
During the last decade many of Europe's largest companies have developed new approaches to financial reporting. A principal aim has been to explain the complexities of the business environments in which they operate to the rapidly expanding international investment community. Earnings and other reported figures are greatly influenced not only by the divergent accounting methods adopted in various European countries but also by the specific application of local tax regulations, company laws, and employment practices, as well as the considerable diversity of financial and commercial environments in which a European company may operate.
