Restaurant Business

Recommended supplement

This is absolutely not a magazine to be taken lightly. Any reader who can peruse this periodical with its advertising examples of what appears to be delicious and exquisitely prepared foods without a craving for breakfast, lunch, or dinner has incredible self-control.
Considering that there are hundreds of trade magazines covering every industry imaginable (see Business Marketing in Chapter 34) choosing a few to represent the industry is difficult. However, perhaps nothing can be closer to the daily life of a human being than eating, therefore, the use of Restaurant Business (RB) in this text is selected as only one of many examples of an industry or trade magazine.

Trade magazines usually mean a lot of ads and a few good articles; however, the feature articles in RB (one or two) are for the most part substantive and well researched and written. The format is colorful and contemporary. A recent cover article focused on RB's fourth annual CEO compensation ranking highlights (according to a survey by compensation consultants William M. Mercer). The entire article takes 14 pages. It is a good example of RB reporting, covering such areas as:

"Tighter Times" "Exit Packages"
"Overview" "Women Execs
"Compensation Rankings" "Bargain CEOs"
"Salary Analysis" "Odds and Ends"
"The Bonus Situation" "Youngest and Oldest"

This type of coverage is appropriate for good reference work and reflects the work of a professional editorial staff. The departments include eight columns covering such useful items as: Calendar, Equipment IQ, Index, etc.
