Business Articles: Business Law
To take a somewhat informal approach to the topic of business law, which is
both free and relatively comprehensive, one shouldfirst
go to the Lectric Law Library's Business Law
Lounge which is "dedicated to matters of interest to business and the folks
running them." Go to: www.lectlaw.com/bus.html. The site covers a number of important topics concerning business at all
levels:
- Money Matters: Capital, Credit, Securities, Taxes, etc.
- Business Organizations: Corporations, Partnerships, etc.
- Laws, Rules and Regulations: Small business, Environmental regulations, etc.
- Employer/Employment Issues: Hiring and Firing, Privacy, etc.
- General Business Materials: Contracts, Cases, Scams, etc.
In order to get a good feel for the publications dealing with legal-business issues, and there
are quite a number, go to FindLaw for Students: http://stu.findlaw.com/journals/business.html or if you had an interest in the law schools themselves, their law
reviews and law student resources you should go to: http://stu.findlaw.com
As most managers know, the company will operate on its contracts, that
is...meeting the requirements of the Uniform Commercial Code - Articles 1 through
9. To find a copy of the Code and as its enacted by a particular state, try the Legal
Information Institute established by Cornell University's Law School: www.law.cornell.edu/ucc/ucc.table.html
or if you would like to stop by the law school itself, go to:
www.law.cornell.edu/index.html
A particularly good source for
finding information dealing with international business law is to be found at the Institute
for International Business Law at: www.uni-muenster.de/jura.iwr/english/berger/linkse/linkse.html
It provides information on:
- International Trade and Commercial Law
- Private International Law
- International Commercial Arbitration
Further Sites of Interest:
Dr. Klaus Peter Berger, LL.M., located at the Institute for International
Business Law at the University of Muenster, Germany, intends to provide a starting page
for research in the legal areas cited above. Aiming at navigability, this link collection
endeavours to focus on the most instructive, reliable, and current sources available on
the internet
Finally, one of the most
comprehensive information services comes from the U.S.Library of Congress located
at: www.loc.gov. There are three general areas dealing with the law found at the LoC site:
(1) Thomas Legislative Information (In the spirit of Thomas Jefferson): This site provides
information on legislation, the Congressional Record, and Committee Information; all to be
found at: http://thomas.loc.gov
(2) The Global Legal Information Network (GLIN) http://lcweb2.loc.gov/law/GLINv1/GLIN.html which maintains and provides a database
of laws, regulations and other complementary legal sources from around the world. The
documents included in the database are contributed by the governments of the member
nations from the original official text:
- Full-text documents in the official language of the country of origin;
- Summaries or abstracts of these laws are provided in English.
(3) The Guide to Law Online a subset of GLIN, is an annotated hypertext guide to the
sources of information worldwide on government and law available online without charge. It
includes links only to the most useful and reliable sites for legal information available
for each of the world's nations (although none, at this date, have qualified for GLIN
certificates of authenticity for completeness and accuracy).
