Recommended Supplement: American Library Association´s Guide to Reference Books
If you are looking for great library web sites then go first to: www.unesco.org/webworld/portal_bib .
This web site, provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is possibly one of the best on the Internet and shouldn't be missed when research is the goal.
One of the primary sources for reference research is the Guide to Reference Books (ISBN 0-8389-0669-9). The present version of the Guide to Reference Books (GRB) is the 11th full edition of a continuing publication by the American Library Association that reaches back to the first edition of 1970. Like other full editions, this one, according to the editors, represents an attempt to reassess the body of reference sources and select those that have been found most useful. As one might expect, the GRB, in keeping with growth in the number and variety of reference sources, has itself increased in size with each edition. The number of titles listed in the 11th edition is roughly 15,500. The 11th edition also includes a higher proportion of titles that support the study of non-Western cultures and of diverse viewpoints than its predecessors.
The present edition has been compiled by 50 librarians from institutions ranging geographically from Harvard and Columbia in the East to the University of California and the Graduate Theological Union in the West. The Economics and Business Section, researched by Bessie Carrington, Duke University, and Rita Moss from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, covers:
General works
Finance and investment
Commerce
Organizational behavior |
Economic conditions and world trade
Company information and industry analysis
Marketing and advertising

No discussion of business information would be complete without acknowledging the huge input of business and economics textbooks and teaching materials. Without any bias in this text, the McGraw-Hill Publishing Cos. is one of the top suppliers in the country if not the world. Those interested in business information should avail themselves of the McGraw-Hill catalogs, which are published annually. Most books are annotated, with tables of contents, plus videos and study guides described. Call the customer relations representative at: (708) 789-4000; or fax: (708) 789-6937.
A second source of reference information is the Walfords Guide (ISBN 0-85365-539-1), published in annual intervals by the Library Association Publishing Company in London. It has been an essential component of the standard reference collection for over 35 years. With its international coverage and ordering information and its evaluation of works, the Guide has become an important tool in building up and in revising reference collections worldwide. The Guide is also for use in general and special inquiry work, particularly for the research student in the initial stages of research. Each edition, usually published in three volumes, covers reference works published in English, although significant material in other languages is not overlooked. The three volumes are identified as:
- Science and technology
- Social and historical sciences, philosophy and religion
- Generalia, language and literature, the arts
Critical annotations and reviewers comments accompany the citations. The entries are selective and evaluative in order to guide the inquirer to the best source of reference in each subject area, whether that source be a journal article, a textbook, a database, a bibliography, a progress report, or a monograph. The subject arrangement is based on the Universal Decimal Classification. A comprehensive subject index reflects the importance of the subject arrangement. The economic section of the book (II) is listed below:
- Social Sciences
- Economics
- Labour & Employment
- Land & Property
- Business Organizations
- Finance & Banking
- Economic Surveys, etc.
- Trade & Commerce
- Business & Management
- Law and Public Administration
