12. Petersonīs Guide to Four-Year Colleges
Recommended Supplement: International Handbook of Universities
This very handy book, over 1,300 pages long, is a quick guide to all the degree-granting institutions of university level in 169 countries and territories and comprises over 4,000 individual entries. A second source of information may be obtained on "Other Institutions of Higher Education" (the World List of Universities, published by IAU) containing more than 9,000 entries. The difference between the two categories of institutions is based solely on the distinction made for each country by the competent national higher education body that provided the authoritative information for the World List entries.
The institutional entries within each country are generally listed in geographical order, by town or province, with postal address and telecommunication information. The name of each institution is systematically given first in English, followed by the name in the national language(s) in italics, where appropriate.
The lists of faculties, colleges, departments, schools, institutes, and so on are intended primarily as a guide to the academic structure of the institutions of which they are a part.
These are followed by brief descriptions of the history and structure of the institutions and by notes on cooperation with university institutions in other countries.
Admission requirements are usually listed for courses leading to a first degree or similar qualification; special requirements for admission to studies leading to higher degrees and specialized diplomas are indicated where appropriate.
The names of degrees, diplomas, and professional qualifications are generally given in the language of the country concerned. The duration of studies, indicated in years or semesters, is normally the minimum period required. Translations into English of fields of study are included where they are likely to be helpful.
The tables on the composition of academic staff follow a descending order of rank, and the respective titles are given in the language of the country concerned.
Information on fees, language of instruction, size of staff, and student enrollment, plus volumes in the library are also included.
