17. Selected Business Periodicals
Description of Publication: INC
According to the Marketing Research Institute of Pensacola, Florida, 53 percent of employed Americans work for a small business with 250 employees or less. Inc. magazine is all about small business and it does one of the best jobs in the nation. It is, as one division of the magazine is called, "hands on" with enough humor and good sense to serve any entrepreneur well.
Inc. has three major departments, which remain mostly the same over the years, as do some of the topics:
- "Hands On"-sales and marketing, managing people, finance, etc.
- Features-anatomy of a start-up, face to face, company profile, etc.
- Columns-FYI, real business, politics, etc.
"Hands On" also includes a unique piece called "The American Dream: Business For Sale." It is a real business for sale, sort of the pick of the month by Inc (even though Inc. prints a disclaimer). The article offers a brief overview of the business; price; outlook; price rationale; and pros and cons. The point, one would guess, is to provide some inspiration to those thousands of budding entrepreneurs who ruminate frequently over such opportunities.
Inc. makes a special effort to include the new on-line technology for its readers. For example, in the letters section, the editors solicit comments and do surveys: "Call in your comments on our toll-free line, (800) 238-1756, or send e-mail to editors@inc.com." Articles sometimes include the writer's e-mail address at the bottom of the page.
Inc. has recently come on-line (www.inc.com). It offers to be "The full-service electronic consultant for people starting and running their own companies." The service, according to the editors, allows you to build your own Web site on Inc.Online. Plus the Web site provides the current issue of Inc. and its archives; tips, interactive worksheets, and list of resources to grow your business; interaction with other entrepreneurs, experts, and Inc. editors; and free software, Web tools, and other items to make your job easier.
Inc. publishes two sets of special bonus issues each year:
- Inc. Technology (quarterly); e-mail correspondence to tech@incmag.com or snail-mail it to Inc. Technology, Letters Editor, 38 Commercial Wharf, Boston, MA 02110-3883.
- Inc.'s 500 Fastest Growing Privately Held Companies.
Inc. sponsors a number of annual conferences, such as Growing the Company, Manufacturing Strategies, and CEO Symposium. Call (800) 255-1080 for information.
Inc. also provides a full range of videos, books, and software on small business management; call Inc. Business Resources at (800) 468-0800, ext. 5495.
