17. Selected Business Periodicals
Recommended Supplement: Forbes
Perhaps one of the first things you notice about Forbes is that for a biweekly magazine it's pretty big-sometimes almost 400 pages. Often that size comes from a special advertising section (e.g., "Detroit Making It Better For Business," 33 pages for articles and advertising) or special lists of rankings for which Forbes is famous (e.g., "World's Best Small Companies"). In one issue, "World's Best Small Companies" took 61 pages of articles, lists of the best small companies, the 200 best, the best small companies in the world, and CEOs of the best small companies in America. This could all be a little overpowering; one could wonder who except the people on the list really care. However, the Forbes 500 annual directory, compiled annually since 1917, must have a little something for everyone in order to be in demand that long. And the annual report on American Industry, which appears in the first January issue, seems to have a macroeconomic perspective that tells a bigger story.
