18. Indexes and Bibliographic Sources

Description of Publication: Wall Street Journal Index

The Wall Street Journal Index provides abstracts and comprehensive indexing of all articles in the 3-Star Eastern Edition of The Wall Street Journal. It is produced under exclusive agreement with the publisher, Dow Jones & Company. The full text of the 3-Star Eastern Edition and other editions is available on microfilm and CD-ROM (check the Web site to see if they are on-line yet). The index is issued in eight monthly and four quarterly cumulations, as well as a hardbound annual volume.

Indexed material includes news items, columns, feature articles, editorials, letters to the editor, obituaries, certain tabular information, earnings reports, dividend reports, and arts reviews. Items not selected for indexing include most stock tables and any editorial cartoons. For many columns that cover a variety of topics (e.g., Credit Markets, World Markets), only the main topic is indexed.

For ease of access, the index is divided into two parts-corporate news and general news. The first part contains abstracts of all articles indexed with company names, which are arranged alphabetically. The second part contains abstracts of all articles indexed with subject headings, personal names, organization names, product names, and geographic names, all of which are interfiled alphabetically (see the Sample Page).

The subject headings are based on a controlled vocabulary developed by UMI, containing approximately 4,000 general subject terms and authority files containing tens of thousands of personal, corporate, organizational, geographic, and product names. The thesaurus and authority files are continually updated to reflect new subject areas in current events. Most subject headings are in natural word order.
